A multi-chambered honeycomb of wood and plexiglass, lost recalls the interconnectedness of human and bee within the context of an accelerating colony collapse disorder. The pulsing and pure generosity of the honeycomb is responsive to its environment and to the human need for nutrition, symbolized by the LED lights thrumming to the baseline of music and sound. Over the course of time, chambers darken until the end when only the chemical formula for neonicotinoid will remain iluminated. Neonicotinoid is a pesticide used widely that causes bees to be unable to find their way back to the hive. As they lose their way, we are increasingly lost as humans. In 2018 the EU banned neonicotinoid; the US still uses it widely.

Guitar Series
Dancing Guitars #1 (2014)
In this piece, Shoemate has (re)centered the British Invasion on women as powerful sexual actors. Similar to his chair series, the guitars are transformed from otherwise inanimate objects to human forms expressing emotions. The union of an electric guitar and a bass guitar highlight the historical significance of bass’ prominent position in the pairing. The straining spines, offset strings, and wide hips of the walnut, beech, and yellow woods capture women’s raw expression of self and sexuality that they married to the music of British bands in the 60s.
Guitar #1: Inspired by Keith Richard’s (Rolling Stones) beat-up 1954 Fender Telecaster Guitar “Micawber” - a six-string with the 6th string removed that he uses to play classics “Brown Sugar” “Mixed Emotions” and “Honky Tonk Woman”. The neck is inlaid with 24 walnut frets representing the 24 articulating vertebrae of the human spine.
Guitar #2: Inspired by Sir Paul McCartney’s (The Beatles) 1961 500/1 Hofner Violin Bass that he still plays. The neck is inlaid with 24 nickel-silver fret wires representing the 24 articulating vertebrae of the human spine.
